ST's HD radio chipset receives iBiquity certification
STMicroelectronics' HD radio chipset has been certified by HD Radio 'inventor' iBiquity digital Corp. for meeting comprehensive performance requirements. The move could translate into more momentum for the HD Radio technology for automotive infotainment.
The iBiquity certificate covers a number of parameters including sensitivity, acquisition time, audio quality verification, bit error rate testing and functional check. ST's chipset combines a baseband receiver with an RF front-end. It enhances the HD Radio functionality with additional features such as Conditional Access Support and Dual Channel Application. In addition, it enables broadcasters to implement pay-per-listen options and private channels for specific applications. The conditional access system scrambles the signal and entitles authorized receivers to decode it with a custom key.
In addition, ST's receiver chipset simultaneously demodulates audio and data from two independent channels, a requirement of the HD radio 1.5 standard.
HD Radio so far has been adopted by 13 automotive brands, in the first place in North America. In Europe, HD Radio competes against the purely digital DAB system. HD Radio, which combines analog and digital data transmission, is said to require relatively large frequency bands. In Europe where in the FM frequency bands the channel distance is 100 kHz as opposed to 200 kHz in the US, HD Radio so far has not gained much acceptance. At present, a commercial roll-out is scheduled only in Switzerland.
